Pros: Very high build quality and optics, sharp already at TA, a blurry one typical of portrait lenses (unusual to be a Macro), beautiful bokeh, IS very effective.

Cons: Shameful lack of tripod collar that given the absurd price force you to buy non-original. Skylight exaggeratedly long.

Opinion: I write after more than a year of use. Before I owned the small and convenient 100/2, the comparison is embarrassing: even closing the small at 2.8 against the macro to TA the difference in sharpness is incredible in favor of the macro. The small one has a softer blurry but that of the macro does not mind at all, it is in fact very pictorial and beautiful unlike the 100 macro 2.8 not L which has a very hard one. Aesthetically it looks good, in the hand it is very solid and well done. The MAF ring in manual is very fluid and has 2 keys to toggle the IS, and choose the mode of AF: macro, landscape and all together. Switching to the specific AF based on use more than doubles the speed of AF. The stabilizer is amazing, it allows me photos on freehand FF with times of 1/10" .. while we know that safely without shooting at least 1/100". I also did freehand Macro tests by setting the AF for short distances, in I-Servo and with is active: the results were amazing, you can take a look in my galleries. With other macros tripod is an obligation. I also used it a lot to make portraits, one of the genres that I prefer: even here it did not disappoint me: certainly the sharpness is so much, in the raw room I have to set -15 of clarity, but the overall result I find it wonderful thanks to the progressive blurry. For me much better than other portrait lenses, because it is much more flexible: it allows you special cuts up close (such as photographing only the eyes, lips etc .. ). I'm just sorry about the shameful lack of a tripod collar that Canon tries to sell you at a robbery price, and also the slightly high cost but definitely right for the high quality. Recently I did it microregular in CS after a fall and it came back even sharper than before, I think it's one of the best goals I've ever had and I'll keep it even in the transition to the R system.

Pros: All... simply perfect throughout

Cons: Nobody

Opinion: A lens of exceptional quality, robust well done as all top of the Canon range, it never disappoints. Great for Macros but also superb with Portraits, it knows how to give really stratospheric boken, I highly recommend, once you try you will never leave it. Image quality and color rendering at the top in my opinion, to date after years of use I can not find a flaw in this optics.

Pros: Everything is impossible but we are not very far away..., it remains the object of desire for me, fulfilled on 1/6/2012, wonderful lens even just as design, to look and handle, robust lens, reliable, sharp, colors and wonderful bokeh that made me love photography and introduced in the mycosm of the "macro" sector. my absolute favorite lens. It's not perfect, as nothing is in photography (for obvious subjective reasons of each), but it is not easy to find him "against" remarkable weight and substance, at least for my experience of use nor could I think of other specialized goals like him, in his focal or in the immediate vicinity (of any brand), and although he has seen many and highly quality in the forum on thousands of photos (from 90 to 105mm), none of them in truth, while producing macro photos that are still splendid, especially by specialists and industry enthusiasts, it has actually never visually transmitted that sensory and liking feeling that give me instead the frames captured and proposed by this lens (as everyone in time I had some monkey jumping in my head , sometimes satisfied, sometimes not, (after all you do that you can', but never in any case revolt, even with a fugitive thought or enough to make me doubt or evaluate a possible replacement with another, of this lens to which I ideally believe, I would not give up "never"; ps. I read of combinations of vintage fixed lenses, toys for good-time, which obviously in the hands of capable people can produce good photos, but that tried and used "inverted" give superior results to this lens, I saw some of those photos and we are talking about the rust against gold, asylum stuff, the 100 macro told me that with that stuff there, it engages no more than 10% of its potential because it's enough and gothing to wipe them away , but for charity...

Cons: Maf USM silent and precise but not lightning, manageable in any case without fear especially when it is set the right selection of the distance scale through the dedicated button on the lens (macro distance, 0.50X or infinity) that affects precisely the efficiency and speed of the range of maf in the range of operational distances between one step of selection and the other, but taken a little confidence and done a little practice , everything is part of normality and efficiency of use and the show that gives you is there at the click of a button. Some feedback of purple fringing to large openings in the situation of backlight and areas and contours caught in high contrast shots, effect however to maximum openings quite normal with bright lenses and not only macro, however correctable according to the cases, either in the post or in operation closing one or two stops (but in the circumstance modifying and obviously evaluating the type of photos expected , quite different to F2.8 than to F5.6...). It would have been welcome to be able to use 1.4x and 2X canon multipliers but I think the choice not to support it was made not to penalize the 180 macro that in the case, despite being a great lens, would have had trouble co-existing and remain in its market segment...

Opinion: A macro objective to which I am strongly attached and to which I can not but dedicate this tribute and personal opinion. Slow that when you take it and try it maybe you don't change it anymore (I without "maybe)", of course if you get in tune with her (but it doesn't take much even if the goals of the species need more depth and learning time to get the desired results that then improve and refine further with time and experience). That said, I would not like to cheer anyone up and make the blame for the merits of this magnificent lens whose references have been known and recognized for years, L series, general quality, weight (for me optimal on Canon reflex bodies, both Aps-c, 60/70/80D and FF, 5D MarkIII, machine bodies on which I have used it for years always fitting like a glove always finding excellent ergonomics and general balance), tropicalization, robustness, definition, detail, extraordinary and natural colors Canon, blurred, bokeh, remarkable detachment of the subject from the bottom with a nice sense of pdc and 3D in some contexts according to the subjects and with pdr studied well, that in macros at close distances but also in the close-up..., versatility (can give satisfaction, if used, even in portraiture, both to more open and medium closed diaphragms as well as it knows how to adapt to resume and display satisfactorily even glimpses of landscape or street) , even in the presence of low light. A lens that knows how to willingly indulge you in the operation as if it were a "tutor" that follows you and listens to you in your evolution, learning and deepening of use over time even if it has always left me 'impression so far, that it could always have some additional margin to offer before bringing it to its limit, this depends on many factors, including also the machine body...). Learning and evolutionary steps in any case that I found sometimes challenging, especially at the beginning, in my photographic path made of passion and "do it yourself", but things have improved then constantly over time and this extraordinary goal, has given me great satisfaction. and photographic gratification. To sum what else to say: 100 macros, for me monumental and absolutely recommended, without hesitation, that "stravale" every euro spent. A thought on the side, calm and spontaneous comes to me in order to those who approach him particular vintage lenses and maybe experimented even with "reverse" use to test the results and then magnify the "best" yield in the result obtained. Intrigued but very doubtful, I have observed some photos shown as an example to support and visual comparison between samples of the two objectives (just some of those I have in the gallery without uncomfortable the best in the forum), the outcome, as I imagined is merciless and I limit myself "only" to the rendering of definition/detail where their in HD express detail and contrast planed), so better to avoid improbable comparative hazards towards sacred monsters such as this lens that has done and still does today history in its photographic segment), lenses such as those fixed vintage (however valid or surprising in their scope of use, especially in the hands of those who know how to enhance them), if compared in a general context or only specific with the macro Canon in question in its range of use , it unsyms them without blinking as many other macro targets in circulation would. Back in topic, to the 100 macro Canon in speech of the rest, the words, at least mine, are at the end marginal and count little or nothing, speak instead objectively and much better, of him, the photos that tell him widely in the various galleries of the forum, the quantity and quality of the samples as well as to seal, the numerous "ep" present at the bottom and in the other pages following for example or the associated comments (just to get an idea and realize its enormous potential and photo level).

Pros: Sharpness, blurred, stabilizer, construction

Cons: Hard to find them

Opinion: I have been using it for over 4 years with great satisfaction, first on canon 70D and now on sony 7R2. Very sharp lens, great for both macro and medium canvases. Excellent performance even with closed diaphragm, the refraction does not feel too much. Superb stabilizer. Soft and very pleasant blend. It is not compatible with canon extender, but I managed to use it without problems with the extender sigma 1.4x.

Pros: All

Cons: Nothing

Opinion: I must say that I am in love with this view. I use it improperly because we only take pictures of portraits, but its engraving, sharpness and versatility is unmatched. It is the most "senior" lens of my outfit, in the sense that I bought it and never resold it. The Straconsiglio, also to those who say and claims that it is not suitable for portraiture.
