Pros: Pleasing and soft bokeh (rounded aperture blades), very good contast and colors, solid construction, not too heavy, good and usable image quality even wide open, very good and sharp at f/2. The only 50mm lens with f/1.2 (but that's only 1/3 stop brighter than f/4) ;-)

Cons: Very expensive (compared to other brands), not as sharp as newer constructions form Sigma, visible reddish CAs (but that's part of its typical image look)

Opinion: much better and sharper than I expected since its image quality was criticised in many tests and forums. Of all Canon 50mm lenses this is by far the sharpest lens between open aperture and f2! With its high contrast, vivid colors and its pleasing bokeh (rounded aperture blades) it delivers very harmonic images. My most used lens for indoor available light photography since I purchased it in 2010. AF is fast but a little slower then most other USM L-Lenses. Solid constuction with weather sealing (if used with filter). But a very expensive lens. Today the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens could be the better choice (even sharper and less expensive).

Pros: Colors, bokeh, small size, F1.2

Cons: Don't have it!

Opinion: I always used the 50mm as the main lens, I wanted to buy this mythical lens and I was surprised! At F2.0 it's a scalpel but at F1.2 it does magic. If you get used to it you can no longer close the diaphragm and it becomes a drug! For the portraits set usually shot between F2 and F2.8 with great satisfaction and excellent results, in the close-ups I open everything and thank you for being there! At TA the sharpness is lower, but not such as to be a defect and the pasty rendering of the colors is, say, its signature. Excellent maf and also color rendering, it is a lens to have in your kit.

Pros: Brightness, low weight, overall quality, etc...

Cons: Knowing what you buy and want, no one.

Opinion: I have to say that my initial approach was terrible because, using it at f1.2, I didn't get a fire right. I realized that the lens needed calibration along with the machine body and spent 100 euros at Camera Service, I fell in love with it... pasty and vivid colors as Canon has accustomed us, monstrous blur, given the extremely reduced pdc to TA is still absolutely usable without problems even at f1.2, the weight and size are extremely small for an f1.2 optics, in addition to the extreme versatility of this focal (much higher than the 85 for example) that allows to make yes the portrait set for which it was created, but also close... just get close to the subject! Let's add that it is now used even for less than 900 Euros, for me it is an optics on ff absolutely advisable, but after calibration at specialized center if it suffers with the body front focus/back focus machine...

Pros: What I deserved from this lens.

Cons: Nothing special.

Opinion: I also own the Zeiss Milvus 1.4 of which I am very happy as a surrender (and why not, even as it is built, I find the latest generation Zeiss very beautiful), but age does not give anything and the focus sometimes becomes difficult. I wanted a 50 with the AF. Almost obligatory choice in the Canon house with EF frame this 50 1.2 L. Everything I read in the other reviews is shareable. I do not use it/I will use it for portraits (or at least not for portraits to "humans" ;-)) but I have already seen that it will accompany the brothers of the L series in an excellent way.

Pros: Color yield, blurred progression, small size, tropicalization, construction. Impressive flare resistance. Autofocus perfect and very fast.

Cons: Ta sharpness not in line with today's "fashion" but far more than enough for the portrait set. The same goes for the pronounced AC in TA. It's addictive and makes you want to use it all the time.

Opinion: I can say with certainty that, alone, the 50L is worth the choice of the Canon brand. Let's start with the construction, perfect like all L Canon series. The standard lampshade is wide enough and extremely solid. The weight is really low compared to the new "heavy calibres" of the 50 (and I think of the 50L RF and 50 Art on all). The optical scheme consists of 8 lenses divided into 6 groups, the diaphragm counts 8 slats, the maximum opening is f/1.2 and the minimum opening of f/16, has a slight, really slight barrel distortion, easily corrected in post production. The diameter is 72mm and you can mount screw filters (which I have never done). The absence of a stabilizer is not felt given the enormity of the light entering the 1.2, this lens makes possible candlelight shots to ISO "humans". The vignette at TA is incredibly present and you have my eyes is precious and beautiful but disappears totally .2.8. There is also a strong presence of AC, especially to the most open diaphragms. I love the lenses I own and I bought them after a thousand reflections, precisely for this reason, I also consider the defects and, on fixed L "historic" (50, 85 and 135) I never correct in post production the AC nor, much less, flaggo in LR the box "activate profile corrections" because I certain lenses I have not bought them only for their merits but, also, for their defects and I keep them tight. In other words, the images that return the 50L have such a special yield, starting with the colors, which will be, once a monitor, truly incredible. The progression of blurring is unique, difficult to imagine a 50 that detaches more and in such a particular way not only at full opening but also at more closed diaphragms. What this lens gets is 2.8 you have to see in person, a quality of detachment and the progression of the fire plans really remarkable. Paired with the 1ds3 provides the best that EF Canon production can give to those who, like me, do not like hypernitidety and hypercorrection. Attracted by the future Canon R5 I will migrate sooner or later to ML but never, ever will I sell 50L, 85L and 135L, unique, incredible lenses that I will always carry with me.
